RIP: Sugar Minott - Jamaican singer, producer and philanthropist. 12.5.56 to 10.7.10 (54)
Jamaican recording artists Sugar Minott has sadly passed away. Press and internet forum reports suggest Sugar died from heart failure aged only 54.
With a number four in the UK Singles chart in March 1981 from his dancehall cover of Michael Jackson's 'Good Thing Going', Lincoln 'Sugar' 'Bugga' Minott was possibly one of the most commercially succesful Jamaican reggae artists outside of Bob Marley. But despite this popular progress, Minott was a rootsman, refusing to abondon the ghetto and the struggle for equality and humanity.
Sugar Minott possessed a wonderful voice, had an eye for emerging talent and worked tirelessly to improve conditions in the Jamaican ghetto with projects like Youth Promotion.
Some while ago I recorded this mix up of some Sugar Minott tracks I have on vinyl. Now seems like a really suitable time to play it:
